My name is Dagney and as you probably know, I am helping Mom learn slang so she can communicate with the grandkids; however, I am finding Dad needs a few lessons too. So far, he is a quick learn. These are some of the words we have covered.
Dope
When the kids called Dad “dope” he thought it was an insult and couldn’t figure out why they would connect him to drugs. I had to explain that it is cool and awesome to be described as dope. You must admit he looks pretty cool in this picture, and I am am pretty awesome myself.
Dropping a Deuce
This is so embarrassing, and I can’t believe Mom took this picture! A dog deserves a little privacy. However, it will help explain the meaning of this slang term. The formal word is to defecate; Mom says go to the bathroom. Wondering how this phrase developed? Sometimes human say they went #1 or #2. A deuce is a reference to the number 2. Get it?
Emotional Crutch
When my little brother, Francisco, came to live with us, he missed his mom and siblings. We gave him a stuffed animal to offer comfort and support him emotionally. This giraffe became his emotional crutch, and he still sleeps with it every night.
Fleek
I can’t imagine Mom will need an explanation once she sees this picture. I am “on fleek.” Yep, my style is perfect and flawless.
Finesse
When Francisco joined our family, I was jealous that he got so much attention. It was bad enough that he was so cute and fluffy, but he had the ability to persuade Mom to give him anything he wanted. He used his eyes, his smile, his overall cuteness to finesse both my parents to spoil him rotten.
Girl Crush
This is my best friend, Darla. She is Mom’s niece. She lives with my Uncle Nick. I love visiting her because we are about the same age, have the same interests, and play well together. I admire her.
Originally Mom wanted to write this book by herself, but to be honest, she doesn’t understand the slang these days. We are now collaborating. She has given me a hundred pics, and I am matching them with slang words to help her understand the strange language of the grandkids.
Maybe you are learning some new words too. See you tomorrow for the next installment of Dagney’s Urban Dictionary. See what I did? I used my name in the title. It is much catchier than the original, Definitions from a Dog’s Point of View.
